Spicy, Healthy Tomato Sauce with Turmeric and Raisins

Dr. Greger's new book, How Not to Die, inspired this spicy, healthy tomato sauce. (Read more about the book and my October Wildly Healthy Organic challenge here.) Surprisingly, the sauce tasted a little spicier than usual but only because we were paying close attention. It's a terrific stealth-health choice. Serve this nutrient-rich tomato sauce with whole grain pasta, barley, or quinoa for a quick lunch or dinner.

My Taster's favorite tomato sauce already includes fire-roasted tomatoes and chipotle for depth and raisins for sweetness. I've boosted the sauce's antioxidant power by switching the yellow onion for a red one and by slipping in turmeric. Dr. Greger recommends a quarter teaspoon of the yellow spice daily to ward off cancer, promote healing, and more. Black pepper and olive oil help your body absorb turmeric's active ingredient, curcumin.

Fresh Corn and Black Bean Salad with optional Daylilies

A big bowl of this sunny salad makes a perfect summer meal. Fresh corn gives it sweetness and snap, while the bright lemon dressing ties the flavors together. Serve it while the beans and corn are still warm for maximum contrast or keep it in the fridge to dish out when it's too hot to cook. Dress it up with a daylily or two for an Instagram-ready meal that's ready in 20 minutes.

Curried Beet Greens with Carrots and Cashews

Beet greens and chard take the place of kale and collards all summer in the Cook for Good kitchen. This recipe pairs the heartiness of the beet greens with sweet carrots and spicy curry. I first made it on a night when I craved Indian food but wanted to stay in my cozy home. Now it's a weeknight favorite.

Strawberry Shortcake - dairy-free and vegan

Celebrate spring with a healthier version of classic strawberry shortcake. Use the ripest organic strawberries you can find, local if possible. Make a quick strawberry sauce and spoon it over tender, barely sweet shortcakes. Top with whipped coconut cream and sugar-sprinkled shortcake tops for layers of flavor and texture. You can make 12 servings in just 45 minutes of active time. This strawberry shortcake recipe is  fancy enough for Easter, Mothers' Day, and graduation but easy enough for tea with friends or Sunday dinner.
